Work in Progress for Penn State Department of Geography (2023)

Description: The Department of Geography is renovating their interior spaces in order to escape its current 1970’s institutional aesthetic, and grow into a much more contemporary, inviting atmosphere. The centerpiece of this renovation is an art installation that flanks the doors of the department office and student lounge. On the facing wall, an interpretive plaque will provide some basic information about the installation, as well as a QR code, linking to a website with expanded descriptions of each map. Not only will it provide visual character for the department, but also opportunities for instructors to discuss topics such as cartographic design, spatial data creation and management, and cartographic representation. The maps needed to represent the most diverse possible range of human and natural features, data types, spatial typologies, and locations.
